On a superyacht, the crew-to-guest ratio is high and guests are high-net-worth individuals who expect to be handled calmly and professionally in any situation. Crisis Management training prepares crew to manage guest behaviour during an emergency — fire, flooding, or man overboard — without causing panic, while coordinating with the captain and following the ship security plan. A crew member without this training is a liability on a charter yacht.

What is the muster and guest evacuation procedure on a superyacht?

On a superyacht the muster signal is 7 short blasts and 1 long blast on the ship's horn or alarm. All guests are directed to the muster station by crew. Interior crew are responsible for guest cabin checks, accounting for all persons on board, and escorting guests to the muster station. Deck crew handle life raft deployment and tender operations. Crisis Management training teaches crew how to execute this efficiently and calmly with guests on board.

What is the difference between Crowd Management and Crisis Management on yachts?

Crowd Management (V/2-7) is for all crew dealing directly with guests — directing them to muster stations, communicating emergency procedures, and preventing panic. Crisis Management and Human Behaviour (V/2-8) is for crew in coordinating roles — managing the overall emergency response, directing other crew, communicating with the bridge, and making decisions under pressure. On a yacht, chief stewardesses and senior deck crew typically hold both.

Is Crisis Management required for all charter yacht crew?

What Is STCW Crisis Management and Who Needs It on Yachts?

STCW Crisis Management and Human Behaviour (STCW Regulation V/2-8, A-V/2-4) is the certificate required for crew in leadership roles during an emergency on board a large passenger yacht. Where Crowd Management covers controlling guests in a crowd.

Under the Large Yacht Code, any yacht carrying more than 12 passengers on commercial voyages must have crew trained in crisis management. This applies to the full charter superyacht market — the yachts where salaries and tips are highest. Captains hiring for charter positions expect this certificate alongside Crowd Management as a pair.
