Is STCW Proficiency in designated Security Duties (PDSD) required to work on board Yachts as crew ?

To work as a Stewardess on Yachts you require minimum STCW Security Awareness (PSA) Course for Security Duties on board but we recommend that you get STCW Proficiency in designated Security Duties (PDSD) to work on the largest yachts in the world.

To work as a Deckhand on Yachts you require minimum STCW Security Awareness (PSA) Course for Security Duties on board. And we recommend to get STCW Proficiency in designated Security Duties (PDSD) to do all required deckhand duties and to work on large yachts.

You need STCW Basic Safety and Yacht training for Deckhands or Stewardesses. A mandatory Certificate is to have when working on board as Yacht Crew is STCW Security Awareness (MCA Approved for Yacht Crew). And we recommend as a minimum to get STCW Proficiency in designated Security Duties (PDSD Yacht crew).

What Is PDSD and Who Needs It on Yachts?

PDSD stands for Proficiency in Designated Security Duties (STCW A-VI/6-2). It is the mandatory STCW certificate for any crew member who carries out security duties on board a commercial or private yacht subject to the ISPS Code.

If you are working as a deckhand or stewardess on a yacht, your Captain needs to see this certificate before they can legally assign you security duties. Most captains on yachts 30m and above require it as standard — it is part of the paperwork every new crew member should have before joining.

The PDSD is separate from STCW Security Awareness (VI/6-1). Security Awareness is the minimum — PDSD is for crew who are actively designated to carry out security duties. If you want to work on charter yachts or yachts operating in international waters, get PDSD, not just Security Awareness.

How the PDSD Fits Into Your Full STCW Package ?

PDSD is one of the certificates included in both the Yachtiecareers Stewardess Training Package and the Deckhand Training Package. If you are starting from scratch and need STCW Basic Safety, ENG1 medical, and all your supporting certificates, it is more cost-effective to do everything together in one 10-day training week in Split. Read our full STCW guide for yacht crew for the complete picture. If you already have your STCW Basic Safety and just need the PDSD, book it below.
