How Long Does STCW Last? Expiry, Renewal & What to Know

This is one of the most searched STCW questions — and the answer trips people up because the convention and the industry have different standards. Here’s the straight version: STCW Basic Safety Training doesn’t print an expiry date on the certificate. But the superyacht industry operates on a 5-year standard. If your STCW is under 5 years old, you’re fine. If it’s over 5 years, most captains and crew agencies will ask you to refresh it before you join. STCW Basic Safety Training — Does It Expire?

Under the international STCW Convention, Basic Safety Training — the four core elements of fire fighting, personal survival, elementary first aid, and personal safety — does not have a mandatory printed expiry date. The certificate you receive after completing it doesn’t come stamped with an end date the way a passport does.

But here’s what actually happens in practice:

• The superyacht industry standard is 5 years. Captains, bosuns, and crew agencies across the Med and Caribbean treat STCW as valid for 5 years from the date of completion. After that, they’ll expect to see a refresher or revalidation before you join.
• Flag states can set their own requirements. The Cayman Islands flag — one of the most common registries for superyachts — has required BST refreshers within 5 years. Malta, Isle of Man, and other European flag states vary but generally align with the 5-year standard.
• MCA guidance. The UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency recommends refreshing BST every 5 years to maintain competency. They don’t mandate a certificate expiry for BST specifically, but their guidance reinforces the 5-year industry norm.

The working rule for superyacht crew: under 5 years — you’re fine, no action needed. Over 5 years — book a refresher before you apply for new positions. A BST refresher takes 2–3 days at an MCA-approved centre.

ENG1 Medical Certificate — Clear Expiry Dates

Unlike STCW BST, the ENG1 has a hard expiry that you must track and renew before it lapses:

• Under 40 years old: valid for 2 years
• 40 and over: valid for 1 year

Without a valid ENG1, you cannot legally work as paid crew on a commercial vessel. Letting it expire mid-contract creates an immediate employment problem. PDSD — Personal Designated Security Duties

The PDSD certificate required on most commercial superyachts has no formal printed expiry under the STCW Convention. In practice, flag states and operators apply a 5-year standard similar to BST. If you completed your PDSD more than 5 years ago and are rejoining the industry, verify with the flag state of the vessel you’re joining whether a refresh is required. Crowd and Crisis Management

Required for all crew on vessels certified to carry more than 12 passengers — which covers virtually all charter superyachts. No formal expiry under STCW, but again the 5-year industry standard applies. If yours is approaching that threshold, plan a refresher before your next contract search.

PSC — Proficiency in Survival Craft

This is the certificate that does have a formal, mandatory 5-year revalidation cycle written into STCW regulation VI/2. PSC is required for crew on vessels with lifeboats — typically larger superyachts. If you hold PSC and it’s approaching the 5-year mark, a refresher course (typically 1–2 days) is required to keep it valid. Don’t confuse this with BST — PSC is a separate, more advanced certificate.

The USCG vs MCA Difference

A lot of the information online about STCW expiry references US Coast Guard rules. If you’re working on superyachts in the Mediterranean or Caribbean, you are almost certainly working under MCA, Cayman Islands, Malta, or another European flag state — not USCG. The USCG renewal timelines and endorsement structure don’t apply to you unless you’re specifically on a US-flagged vessel. Focus on MCA-accepted training and the flag state of your vessel — everything else is noise.

Practical Renewal Timeline for Superyacht Crew

Here’s the simple version for most crew:

• STCW BST under 5 years: no action needed
• STCW BST over 5 years: book a 2–3 day refresher at an MCA-approved centre before applying for positions
• ENG1 expiring within 3 months: book renewal now — don’t let it lapse
• PDSD over 5 years: check with your flag state, likely need a refresher
• PSC approaching 5 years: mandatory refresher required, book a 1–2 day course
• Returning after a break of more than 5 years: treat your full certificate stack as needing refresh and do it all in one programme — the fastest and most cost-effective approach
