Seamans Discharge Book for Yacht Crew — Complete Guide

The Seamans Discharge Book is one of those documents that most new crew have never heard of before they start looking at yacht jobs — and then suddenly everyone is talking about it. This guide covers exactly what it is, whether you need it before your first job, which discharge book to get, and how the Cayman Islands version works. If you want to get started on the application as part of your training, view our deckhand training packages or stewardess training packages — we help with the Cayman Islands discharge book application as part of every programme. For the complete list of everything you need before your first contract, read our qualifications checklist for yacht crew.

What Is a Seamans Discharge Book?

A Seamans Discharge Book — also called a Seaman’s Book, Seafarer’s Discharge Book, or Continuous Discharge Certificate (CDC) — is an official document that records your sea service. Every time you join and leave a vessel as paid crew, the yacht’s Captain signs an entry confirming your time on board, your role, and your conduct. Over your career, it becomes a verified record of every vessel you have worked on and the sea time you have accumulated.

Think of it as the maritime equivalent of a passport for your career. It proves to port authorities, immigration officers, and future employers that you are working crew — not a tourist — and that you have the sea service to back it up.

The Seamans Discharge Book serves several practical functions:

  • Proof of sea service — verified by a Captain’s signature on every vessel you join and leave
  • Immigration and visa purposes — it proves to port authorities that you are working crew, which affects how you are treated when entering countries and transiting internationally
  • Career progression — accumulating sea miles in your discharge book is what qualifies you to sit Officer of the Watch exams and progress through the maritime career ladder
  • Employment record — management companies use it to verify your experience when considering you for positions on their vessels
  • Transit visas — in certain countries, a valid Seamans Book allows you to transit without the standard tourist visa requirements

Do You Need It Before Your First Yacht Job?

No — not for most entry-level positions. A Captain can hire you as a junior deckhand or third stewardess without a discharge book already in hand. What they cannot hire you without is your STCW Basic Safety Training certificate and your seafarer medical certificate. Those are mandatory from day one. The discharge book is strongly recommended, but it is not what blocks you from getting hired at the start.

That said, having one before your first contract puts you in a stronger position than candidates who do not. It signals that you are serious, that you understand the industry, and that you have done your preparation properly. Some larger yachts — 50 metres and above — do require crew to already have a discharge book before joining. As you progress beyond your first contract into more competitive positions, not having one becomes a disadvantage.

The cleanest approach: get it sorted alongside your STCW training before you start looking for work. It is one less thing to organise while you are also trying to find a job and navigate your first weeks in the industry.

The Cayman Islands Seamans Discharge Book

The Cayman Islands issues one of the most widely used and accepted Seamans Discharge Books in the superyacht industry. The reason comes down to flag state registration — a large proportion of the world’s superyacht fleet is registered under the Cayman Islands flag, which means Cayman-issued crew documents are familiar to Captains, port authorities, and management companies worldwide.

When you apply for a Cayman Islands Seamans Discharge Book, the document is issued by the Cayman Islands Shipping Registry. It is a fully official maritime document, internationally recognised, and accepted on vessels flying any flag — not only Cayman-registered yachts. Getting a Cayman Islands discharge book does not tie you to working on Cayman-flagged vessels. It is a seafarer’s document, not a vessel document.

The Cayman Islands discharge book is the one we recommend and assist with at Yachtiecareers for the following reasons:

  • Widely recognised across the global superyacht fleet regardless of yacht flag
  • Accepted by port authorities worldwide as proof of seafarer status
  • The Cayman Islands Shipping Registry has a straightforward application process
  • Many Captains and management companies are already familiar with it
  • It gives you the immigration and transit benefits of a seafarer’s document in the broadest range of countries

What You Need to Apply for a Cayman Islands Seamans Discharge Book

To apply for the Cayman Islands Seamans Discharge Book you need the following documents ready:

  • Valid passport — with sufficient validity remaining (ideally two or more years)
  • STCW Basic Safety Training certificate — the Cayman Islands application requires STCW to be completed before applying. This is the most important prerequisite. You cannot submit without it.
  • Seafarer medical certificate (ENG1 or equivalent) — valid medical fitness certificate from an approved maritime doctor
  • Passport-style photograph — taken within the last six months
  • Completed application form — the Cayman Islands Shipping Registry application, filled out correctly
  • Application fee — varies but is typically in the range of $75–$150 USD

When you train with Yachtiecareers in Split, we guide you through the Cayman Islands discharge book application as part of your programme. By the end of your training week, your STCW and medical certificate are both completed — so you have the two critical prerequisites in hand and can submit the application immediately.

Other Flag States — Which Discharge Book Do You Get?

The flag state of the yacht you are working on can determine which discharge book you are issued. Here is how the main flag states work:

Marshall Islands

Marshall Islands is another major superyacht registry alongside Cayman Islands. The Marshall Islands Maritime Administrator issues its own Seamans Discharge Book to crew on Marshall Islands-flagged vessels. It is also widely accepted internationally. If you join a Marshall Islands-flagged yacht as your first vessel, your Captain may assist you in getting a Marshall Islands discharge book issued through the vessel’s management company.

United Kingdom (MCA)

For yachts registered under the UK flag, crew can apply for a UK Continuous Discharge Certificate (CDC) through the MCA. British crew in particular may prefer to get a UK CDC as their primary document, though the Cayman Islands book remains a valid and widely accepted alternative for crew of any nationality.

Malta

Malta is a significant flag state in the Mediterranean. The Malta Maritime Authority issues discharge books and seafarer documentation for crew on Maltese-flagged vessels.

Your Home Country

Depending on your nationality, you may also be eligible for a discharge book issued by your home country’s maritime authority. Swedish crew can apply through Transportstyrelsen, Australian crew through AMSA, and so on. In practice, for most international yacht crew, the Cayman Islands discharge book is the most practical choice because it is not tied to the yacht’s flag and is accepted globally.

How to Apply for Your Seamans Discharge Book

The process for the Cayman Islands Seamans Discharge Book works as follows:

  1. Complete your STCW Basic Safety Training — this is the non-negotiable prerequisite. The application cannot proceed without it.
  2. Get your seafarer medical certificate — your ENG1 or equivalent from an approved maritime doctor
  3. Prepare your documents — valid passport, crew photo, STCW certificate, medical certificate
  4. Complete the application form — through the Cayman Islands Shipping Registry or with assistance from Yachtiecareers
  5. Pay the application fee
  6. Receive your Seamans Discharge Book — issued by the Cayman Islands Shipping Registry and posted to your address

When you train with us, we walk you through this process and help with the application. You leave Split with your STCW and medical certificate completed — the two documents you need to submit — and your discharge book application either in progress or ready to submit immediately on return.

How Much Does a Seamans Discharge Book Cost?

For the Cayman Islands Seamans Discharge Book, the application fee is typically in the range of $75–$150 USD. The exact current fee is set by the Cayman Islands Shipping Registry and is subject to change — check the current rate at the time of your application. Additional costs may include postage for the document to reach you internationally.

This is a one-time cost for the book itself. Once issued, the discharge book is valid for ten years and does not require renewal fees — only the entries made by Captains as you accumulate sea service. It is one of the best value documents in your career given how long it lasts and how many doors it opens.

What Happens to Your Discharge Book Once You Have It?

Every time you join a new vessel as paid crew, the Captain makes an entry in your discharge book confirming your sign-on date, your role, and the vessel details. When you leave, they make a discharge entry confirming your sign-off date and your conduct — typically marked as “VG” (Very Good) for crew who performed well and behaved professionally. These entries build up over your career into a complete, Captain-verified record of your sea service.

Look after it. A discharge book with clean VG entries from well-known yachts is a significant career asset. A book with gaps, adverse conduct entries, or frequent short contracts tells its own story. Your discharge book is your maritime reputation in physical form.

Getting Your Discharge Book as Part of Your Training

The most efficient way to get your Cayman Islands Seamans Discharge Book sorted is as part of your STCW training week with Yachtiecareers in Split. By the end of the week your STCW is complete, your medical certificate is done, and we assist with the discharge book application — so you leave fully prepared rather than coming home with one certificate and a list of other things still to organise.
