Top 5 Yacht crew skills (Deck)

When working as Yacht crew, these are the attributes you need to have:

  1. Details – Look for things out of place. If it is not 100% perfect, it needs to change.
  2. Giving the extra 20% at all times – Make the extra effort for the guests and the other crew on board.
  3. Responsibility and initiative – If you spot something is wrong, go and fix it. If you are not sure how, then ask advice from experienced crew.
  4. Being organised – Mask up, even the smallest locker hidden away, should be as perfect as the guest areas.
  5. Protect – Treat the crew, equipment and Yacht like it was your own House and family.

If you have these attributes many of the most important tasks you will be doing on deck will be easy to do to perfection. This will include:

  • Wash downs
  • Product Knowledge and use of products
  • Masking up for jobs
  • Detailing
  • Varnishing

Any job on board, both Stewardess jobs and Deckhand jobs, follow the same principles. In our Superyacht Course we have gathered 27 rules described in detail- that will make everyone the ideal crew member.

You can learn all the tasks on board, from detailing to yacht and ships operations, as long as you have these attributes, and make sure they shine through on your CV – because it will make your CV move up in the recruitment pile for yacht jobs.

For example completing wash downs together in a team is easy, as long as you look out for details and do not miss anything. As long as you give it another 20% it will end up looking perfect. By taking responsibility and not expecting anyone else to complete the work tasks you will be a good crew member, and make the other Stewardesses and Deckhands work in the same way.

By being organised and protecting the areas and the yacht, you will complete the tasks faster, with no damage to the equipment or the yacht. Think about it this way, everything on board has a value of 10x times more than you would expect. And everything that breaks, the crew (YOU) will be responsible for repairing. The more work you have to spend repairing, the less time there will be for amazing days off in amazing towns, islands and beaches.
