What is a ENG1 and do yacht crew need one?

This is perhaps the biggest misunderstanding in Yachting. I have seen even experienced Captains get their facts wrong. Because of that we have made a clear guide. If you follow below guidelines, you will be qualified to work on any yacht in the world. (As far as your medical certificate is concerned).

Some key points to take away:

1. All seafarers, including crew on yachts need to have a Seafarers Medical Certificate in addition to their  STCW Basic Safety training.
2. This must be performed through a medical examination at a licensed Doctors office.
3. This can be Completed in every country in the world on the STCW whitelist and your country is 99% included.  As long as you are not from Sudan, Afghanistan or East Timor.
4. What is an ENG1?
   1. The ENG1 is what this medical certificate and examination for seafarers is called in the United Kingdom (UK).
   2. If you are British, your doctor will give you a Medical Certificate called ENG1. You can see a list of doctors in the UK here.
   3. But if you are Swedish, Norwegian, South African, American, Portuguese or any other country in the world, then your Doctor will give an ENG1 called something different. In most cases it will be called simply a Medical Certificate for Seafarers. This is the exact same thing as an ENG1 for your home country, and has the exact same value for working on yachts.
   4. If you are British get an Eng1. But if you are not get a Medical Certificate for Seafarers.
   5. For a list of doctors in your home country to issue this medical certificate you can see a list here for:
      1. Norway
      2. Sweden
      3. Netherlands
      4. USA and many other countries your regular Doctor can issue this as long as you give them the Medical Form to fill in.
